Rapport Building
Rapport is a bridge building exercise between the coach and the individual.
There are three ways of building the Rapport Bridge.
Construction of Language
When coaching a visual individual the bridge needs to be constructed using visual
words. Auditory individuals need a bridge of tone, pitch and pace.
Kinaesthetic individuals need to feel the bridge is solid and safe.
Body Language
You are observing three couples in a restaurant, none of them are speaking.
1st couple have recently met and are madly in love.
2nd couple have been together several years and the relationship has broken down.
3rd couple have been together years and are comfortable in each other’s company.
Could you identify which is which? Of course! We are natural experts at reading
body language
1st couple will be matching and mirroring. When one drinks, the other drinks. They
will be leaning towards each other. They will be in harmony.
2nd couple will be sitting in opposing positions. Little eye contact and would move
independently from each other. No harmony
3rd couple will be sitting in a relaxed manner. Open body language. Although not as
intense as couple 1 they will be matching and mirroring.
Mirroring
When other person moves or looks like your reflection. You lift your right arm they
lift their left
Matching
You lift your right arm, they also raise their right
Amplification Language
Volume, pitch tone and speed at which individual’s speak
We all have a preferred style
Visual individuals usually breathe quickly from the top of their chests and speak
quickly with a high pitch.
Auditory individuals will have a wide range of tone and pitch and pace will be
regular.
Kinaesthetic individuals will be slow and low in volume, pitch and tone.
